MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

After the usual 15 or so minutes of members arriving, enjoying a light lunch and catching up with one another, President Doug Fleming rang the bell and got the first club meeting of September underway - first with the club's sincere condolences to Glen Presley and his family, on the loss of his wife, Carolyn, followed by the reciting together of Rotary's Four Way Test.

...

Doug welcomed the guest speakers, Petra Pfeiffer, Colleen Bosch and Glory.

President Doug reported that the supper with DG Darcy at the Cypress Club, followed by a meeting at The Monarch, on Thursday evening, 10 September, had been enjoyable and attended by a number of our club members (please see in MINUTES section of this newsletter).

Doug announced that DG Darcy has made a change to his plans and will be attending our noon meeting on 19 October 2026.

Margie Booyens had the pleasure of introducing the guest speakers who engaged and informed members around the Medicine Hat Victim Assistance and Facility Dog Program (please see in STORY section of this newsletter).

President Doug wrapped the meeting by reminding members that Rotarians Alain Guerard, Tarek Williams and Treasurer Gail Halderman would be facilitating a discussion on fundraising, on Monday 21 September.

He wished all a good week.

Upcoming Meetings
  • September 21 - Discussion on fundraising facilitated by Alain Guerard and Tarek Williams
  • September 28 - Natalie Sauer and members of our club giving a retrospective review of the Special Olympics

ROTARY AT MEDICINE HAT LEVEL: MONARCH 1911 SOCIETY

The Monarch is hosting two musical events that might interest Rotarians:

To stay up to date with the Monarch program, please consult The Monarch website at: https://themonarchtheatre.ca

Our club will try to keep track of events on at the Monarch, and will give members a heads-up about opportunities to serve.  If you are interested in volunteering at the Monarch, please let Rotarian Janessa Anderson know (403-952-1907) and she will provide details of available shifts and responsibilities.

Volunteering at a show is a great way to connect with the community and support our historic local landmark.

Stories
Glory - and the Medicine Hat Victim Assistance and Facility Dog Program

It turns out that a few of our members had personal or family experience of the Medicine Hat Victim Assistance & Facility Dog Program; the majority, however, only a general idea of who and what the MHPS Victim Assistance Unit is all about.

Thanks to Program Manager Petra Pfeiffer and Volunteer in the Facility Dog Program Colleen Bosch, as well as Glory the beautiful golden labrador, we left with a much wider, deeper, more accurate understanding of this valuable MHPS program in our community.

Petra kicked off the presentation, explaining that the unit ensures victims of crime receive professional services in accordance with the Canadian Victim Bill of Rights and the Alberta Victims of Crime and Public Safety Act.

The philosophy of the MHPS VA is to support the well-being of victims of crime and tragedy by providing timely, professional, client-centered and trauma-informed services. They collaborate with other community organizations to minimize personal and system-induced trauma.

Interestingly, the unit team comprises: the program manager (Petra Pfeiffer), navigation specialist, VA support dogs (including Glory), an administrative assistant, victim assistance volunteers (including Colleen Bosch), and  practicum students.

The Victim Assistance Unit is funded by the Government of Alberta and the city of Medicine Hat Police Services.

Petra explained the services of the unit, which include:

  • Crisis assistance upon request of MHPS

  • Providing referrals

  • Providing court updates at key times in the court process

  • Providing court orientation and direct courtroom support

  • All interactions with clients are documented on the VCM Data Management Program

Colleen Bosch gets immense satisfaction from volunteering. She is the mother of three grown-up children, and the owner of a finishing carpentry business in Medicine Hat. Being the owner of this business allows her to take time to volunteer in the Facility Dog Program, which she has done for four years.

Colleen introduced us to Glory, a 5-year-old cool, calm, and very disciplined golden Labrador, who loves dried pumpkin and never-ending belly rubs! Colleen has been Glory’s second handler for two years now. The first handler of a facility dog is always a police officer, in this instance, Jason Dola.

Drawing on her own knowledge and experience, and a White Paper written by Kim Gramlich, Colleen sketched the uniqueness of accredited facility dogs. They are purpose-bred from a breeding pool from within assistance dog schools; bred for health, temperament, behaviour and trainability.

Facility dogs are trained from birth. At 8 weeks they are placed with trained volunteers. These ‘puppy raisers’ have the dog with them for approximately 1-1.5 years.

At 1.5 to 2 years of age, the dogs begin full-time training with professional assistance dog trainers. Professional trainers are responsible for all the advanced skills the dogs will learn, as well as the assessment/testing of the dogs.

Although Facility Dogs do not have legal public access like service dogs, they are generally granted courtesy access when working.

Interestingly, only about 50-60% of assistance dogs in training, graduate. Also, accredited Facility Dogs are insured for activities associated to their professional duties.

It was delightful to see the very special bond between Colleen and Glory, and to observe the beautiful Lab demonstrating some of the many requirements of Facility dogs, namely having low energy, a calm and stable temperament, and exceptional obedience.

What a privilege and pleasure meeting Petra, Colleen and Glory! Thank you for being our guest speakers and for giving us insight into aspects of the workings of the Victim Assistance Unit of the Medicine Hat Police Service. We value the work that you do, offering a great and much-needed service to victims of crime. Thank you!

  • CITIZENS WALK ABOUT: SEPTEMBER 4, 2026

Our Rotary Club donated $1,000 to support this year's Citizen Walk About, an event that aims to celebrate persons with disability in our community and to promote their inclusion in community life. President Doug Fleming was not able to attend, so Terry Brekko stood in for him and said a few words about Rotary's long involvement in the community, including the building of the city's first swimming pool in that park, which subsequently became known at Rotary Park. He said how proud our Club was to support an event of this nature and thanked the many agencies who supported and attended the event. Terry was presented with a thank you gift for our Club by Kate MacDonald of REDI Enterprises. In the image below, Kate, Terry and Mayor Linnsie Clark.

  • YUELL FOUNDATION FALL GOLF TOURNAMENT FUNDRAISER: Dave Panabaker reported that our club had received a nice thank you letter note from the Yuell Family Foundation for lending them our Rotary canopy for their fall fundraising golf tournament. The canopy was used to shelter ‘hole in one’ spotters from the elements on the course. Three clubs supplied canopies, so Rotary was well represented!

  • MEETING WITH DG AT THE MONARCH:

Dave Panabaker contributed the following for inclusion in this week's Weekly News:

"Members of the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat, joined the Saamis Rotary Club on Thursday September 10th for a meal and then a visit to the Monarch Theatre, with a presentation by 5360 District Governor Darcy Mykytyshyn.  It was a great evening of learning about our new DG and celebrating a very unique project at the Monarch.  DG Darcy gave a short talk and then ran an exercise about our Rotary Clubs, making us think and stretch our imaginations about what Rotary can be.  A great time.”

  • DISTRICT ACTION PLAN: Sunrise Rotary Club has created an opportunity for Rotarians in Medicine Hat to become familiar with the District Action Plan. Where: Cypress Club. When: Tuesday 29 September. Time: 6:30-8:30pm.
  • BRUCE SHEPARD:

Our community will be facing potentially significant change in the coming years. Several private concerns, as well as provincial and civic agencies, are busy promoting the economic development of our community and the area. While new industries, and the jobs and tax revenue they bring, will be welcome they represent a dual edge sword for heritage resources. Too often heritage resources, specifically historic buildings and archaeological sites, are
seen as barriers to be overcome rather than resources to be developed. To address this dilemma, the Historical Society of Medicine Hat and District will be encouraging community discussions to discuss and develop options. Other communities across the country have already dealt with such challenges and we can learn from their experiences. Members and partners of the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat are cordially invited to attend two events where these important questions will be discussed:
    1. “Pockets of the Past.” Well known podcaster Brian Konrad will be recording an interview with Malcolm Sissons and Sally Sehn, authors of a regular column
about the community’s heritage in the Medicine Hat News, on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 beginning at 7:00 PM in the historic Monarch Theatre.

  • 2. “The Future of Our Past.” The regular meeting of the Historical Society of Medicine Hat and District will feature a panel discussion on how the community
wants to deal with the pending changes. Panel members will include Malcolm Sissons, Vice President of the Historical Society; Cathy Linowski, Board Member
of the South Eastern Alberta Archaeological Society; and Janessa Anderson, Manager of the Monarch Theatre and a members of the Saamis Rotary Club. The
Moderator will be City Councillor Chris Hellman. It will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 in the Studio Theatre of the Esplanade beginning at 7:00 PM.
Family of Rotary:
  • Glen Presley's wife, Carolyn, has passed away. Sincere condolences to Glen and the Presley family.
  • Deb Panabaker, wife of Dave Panabaker, had surgery on Monday 24 August. She is recovering at home and doing well!
  • Deb Best is home and on the mend.
To all, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Please keep a Board Member informed about members health and/or any other changes, so that information can be provided to the club through the Weekly News.
