The club was very happy to welcome the "new" Executive Director of the Medalta Clay District, Aaron Nelson.  Medalta is a "World Class cultural destination with a heart of clay", and strives to do four things well:
  • Creativity
  • Learning
  • Community
  • Heritage
Since the Society was formed in 1986, the area has survived floods and fire, and has now become a Destination for tourists and artists from around the globe.  A recent long range plan was approved by the Board and has provided a roadmap for their work, and a focus of activity and fundraising.

They are currently working on an Artist Lodge, a conversion of the old plant office at IXL Brick and Tile.  Started with a $350K donation from BMO, this $800K project will house up to 12 artists at a time in a modern, local dwelling which provides appropriate accomodate for visiting craftsmen.  In the last 7 years a total of 228 international artists have worked at the site.

Aaron answered a number of questions, was presented with (what else) a Medalta mug from President Karen and Aaron took the time to thank the Rotary Club in general and a number of specific Rotarians who have been supporters, members of the society, donors and members of the Board.  A timely donation by the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat was instrumental at the beginning of this process in getting the project moving and Rotarians continued support is much appreciated.
